Avangard Omsk claims Russian Super League title

Avangard Omsk beat Metallurg Magnitogorsk for the Super League chanmpionship. Below are the box scores of the five game series that went to the absolute brink to decide the Super League champion.

GAME 5 Recap:
After losing the first two games of the Super League finals to seemingly unbeatable Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Avangard Omsk regrouped at home and one the next two games of the best of five series. Now with the series tied up, the outcome of the championship rested in this final, fifth game in Magnitogorsk. Both teams played a very conservative game, afraid to allow the first goal. Avangard almost opened the scoring in the second period when defenseman Nikitin ripped a slapshot from the blue line between screened Norm Maracle’s legs. However, the goal did not count, due to a crease violation of one of Omsk’s forwards. Ottawa Senators prospect Alexei Kaigorodov created a great chance for Evgeny Koreshkov. He fed the veteran the puck right on the side of the crease, but Koreshkov could not connect and the nice feed. Finally, with a 0:0 score after overtime, the game’s outcome was determined with penalty shots, where Avangard defeated Metallurg two goals to one (Weiss, Bednar - Subbotin).

GAME 4: Avangard (Omsk) – Metallurg (Magnitogorsk) – 3:2 (0:2, 1:0, 2:0). (Series 2-2)
Goals: 0:1 Gladskikh 16 (Osipov, Varlamov, 12.52, pp.), 0:2 E.Koreshkov 11 (Piskunov, Klimentev, 16.46), 1:2 Prokopev 28 (Zatonskiy, Sushinskiy, 20.53), 2:2 Subbotin 7 (Patera, Tverdovskiy, 41.10, pp.), 3:2 Subbotin 8 (Nikitin, 51.04).

Prospect Notes: Evgeny Gladskikh (Vancouver Canucks) scored his 16th goal of the season off a nice one timer from Osipov. He has been one of Metallurg's most consistent scorers. Columbus Blue Jackets expansion draft pick Dmitri Subbotin scored two goals for the first time this season. He scored his first one off the faceoff while falling, looking like he would not make the shot, which caught Norm Maracle by surprise. He got lucky on the second one, ripping a slap shot from the blue line that bounced off the goalie's glove, crawling past the goal line.

GAME 3: Avangard (Omsk) – Metallurg (Magnitogorsk) – 2:1 (1:0, 0:1, 0:0, 0:0, 1:0). (Series 1-2)
Goals: 1:0 Sushinskiy 22 (Zatonskiy, Ryabykin, 10.49, b.), 1:1 Chekh 2 (Kaigorodov, 23.50), 2:1 Prokopev 27 (reshayuschiy bullit).
Three Stars: Sushinskiy, Kaygorodov, Prokopev.

Prospect Notes: Evgeny Gladskykh scored his penalty shot at the end of the game, but it wasn't enough to give his club victory, as Avangard edged Metallurg three penalty shots to two.
