Blues NCAA prospect update

By Sydney Hunte

David Backes, C—MSU/Mankato

Only
three Blues prospects are playing in the college ranks this season, all of them
forwards. Here’s a look at how each are
faring.

David Backes, C –
MSU-Mankato, sophomore

Height
– 6’3, Weight – 210 lbs., DOB – 1985-5-01

Drafted
by the Blues in the second round in 2003, Backes shone in the USHL, playing in
87 games over two seasons with Lincoln and notching 90 points (39 goals, 51
assists). However, he tended to get
himself in penalty trouble as well, with 180 penalty minutes over those two
seasons, including 126 in 2002-03. In
2003, Backes enrolled at Minnesota State University’s Mankato campus, and in
his first season, racked up 16 goals, 21 assists, and 66 PIMs. This season, he leads his team with nine
points in eight games.

MacMurchy,
a ninth round pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, tried his trade with the BCHL’s
Vernon Vipers in 2001-02, where he scored 20 points in 55 games. He made the move up to Wisconsin in 2002-03
and scored 24 points in his freshman season, while notching 69 penalty
minutes. He comes off a career sophomore
season in 2003-04, with 15 goals and 13 assists in 43 games. He’s off to a decent start this year with
seven points in seven games.

Lee Stempniak, F –
Dartmouth, senior

Height
– 6’0, Weight – 195 lbs., DOB – 1983-2-4

Stempniak
enters his senior season with the Big Green in 2004-05, looking for a good year
that will earn him a pro contract.
While having a strong sophomore season in 2002-03 with 21 goals and 28
assists in 34 games, he trailed off a bit in 2003-04, with 16 goals and 22
assists, also in 34 games. The Blues’
fifth-round draft pick in 2003 will attempt to end this downward spiral as he
enters the final season of a relatively successful college career.
