Lightning CHL prospects update

Andy Rogers, the 30th overall choice in the 2004 draft, is one of seven Tampa Bay Lightning prospects currently playing in the CHL.

Andy Rogers, D – Calgary Hitmen, WHL

Height: 6’5, Weight: 206 lbs., DOB – 1986-08-25

Andy Rogers, the 30th overall pick in the 2004 draft, is in his third season with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. In 64 games last season he had one goal and four points, with 89 penalty minutes. Rogers is noted for good defensive skills and a hard shot. He was invited to be a part of the 2004 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and was also a member of Team WHL at the 2004 ADT Canada Russia Challenge. In 15 games this season Rogers has one goal and four assists, surpassing his point total of last year with five.

Justin Keller, LW – Kelowna Rockets, WHL

Height: 5’11, Weight: 185 lbs., DOB – 1986-03-04

An eighth-round pick in 2004, Justin Keller is in his second season with the Memorial Cup winning Kelowna Rockets. In his rookie season with the club in 2003-04, he was second in scoring behind Randall Gelech with 25 goals and 46 points in 72 games and fifth in WHL rookie scoring. Keller is noted for a willingness to fight for the puck and has both good vision and a good wrist shot. He scored the game winning goal for the Rockets against the QMJHL Champion Gatineau Olympiques to secure the Memorial Cup win on home ice. In 41 games this season Keller has a team leading 15 goals and his 29 points put him second in scoring behind Tyler Mosienko.

Jan Zapletal, D – Regina Pats, WHL

Height: 6’3, Weight: 187 lbs., DOB – 1986-08-21

Jan Zapletal, a sixth-round pick in 2004, is in his rookie season with the Regina Pats of the WHL, coming from the Czech Junior League in his native country. The 6'3 defenseman skates well for his size and is reliable in his own end of the ice. He is also noted for having good passing skills and an accurate slap shot. In 29 games with Regina this season he has two goals, four points and a -5 rating.

Mark Tobin, LW – Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL

Height: 6’3, Weight: 211 lbs., DOB – 1985-11-26

A second-round pick, 65th overall in the 2004 draft, Mark Tobin is in his third season with the Rimouski Oceanic. In 69 games last season he had 38 points and 112 penalty minutes. His 22 goals were good for fifth on the team, behind the leading goal scorer Sidney Crosby who had 54 on the season. Tobin is known as a power forward that battles in front of the net and plays a physical game. In 41 games this season he has 12 goals and 27 points with 62 penalty minutes. His -7 rating puts him in second last on the team in that category, ahead of Alexandre Vachon who has a -10 rating.

Zbynek Hrdel, LW – Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL

Height: 6’4, Weight: 195 lbs., DOB – 1985-08-19

A ninth-round selection in the 2003 draft, Zbynek Hrdel is in his third season with the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL. In the 2003-04 season he had 15 goals and 46 points and his +19 rating ranked him fifth on the Oceanic. A native of the Czech Republic, Hrdel is represented his country in North Dakota at the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championships. In 36 games this season he has 14 goals, 38 points and a +10 rating.

Jonathan Boutin, G – Prince Edward Island Rocket, QMJHL

Height: 6’2, Weight: 210 lbs., DOB – 1985-03-28

Jonathan Boutin, a third-round pick in 2003, is one of two Lightning goaltenders currently playing in the CHL. He is in his fourth season in the QMJHL and his first full season with the Prince Edward Island Rocket, coming over from the Halifax Mooseheads last season. Boutin had 13 wins, one shutout and a 2.98 goals against average. Noted for taking up a lot of the net because of his size, he has good lateral movement and can control rebounds effectively. So far this season Boutin has 15 wins, one shutout and a 3.25 goals against average.

Gerald Coleman, G – London Knights, OHL

Height: 6’4, Weight: 190 lbs., DOB – 1985-04-03

Gerald Coleman, a seventh-round pick in the 2003 draft, is in his third season with the London Knights of the OHL. Last season he was second to only his teammate, Ryan MacDonald, with a 2.20 goals against average and his five shutouts and .931 save percentage were tops in the OHL. Coleman was named OHL player of the week on Nov. 8th and is currently leading the OHL with a 1.65 goals against average, 19 wins and a .941 save percentage.
