Wild welcome Fernandez, Lukowich and Sutton.

By Brandon Vizenor

On Monday the Wild started to get a little more active in hockey by making a couple of trades.

Trade #1:

Andy Sutton, a third round selection in 2001, and a seventh round pick in this year’s draft from the San Jose Sharks for an eighth round selection in 2001 and
future considerations. Andy Sutton is a 1998 Graduate of Michigan Tech University. He was also named WCHA Co-Defenceman of the Year in 1997-98 and All-WCHA Second Team. The last two years Sutton split time between San Jose and and the Kentucky Thoroughblades
of the AHL. We will have to see in October if Sutton stays in the big show.

Trade number two:

The Wild acquired goalie Manny Fernandez and defenseman
Brad Lukowich from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a
third round selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and
fourth round selection in 2002.

Manny Fernandez helped lead the Houston Aeros to the
1999 Turner Cup, the IHL’s version of the Stanley Cup.
Some of his IHL stats include: A 34-6-9 record for the
Aeros in 1998-99 and a 2.36 GAA in 50 games played,
including opening the season with a 22-game unbeaten
streak (17-0-5). Fernandez was a third round (52nd overall)
pick for Quebec in the 1992 Entry Draft. He was sent
to the Stars in 1994 in exchange for Tommy Sjodin and
a third round choice in the 1994 draft. Manny should
be a stand out goaltender for the Wild, but only if
they could of had Denis though. But, they are both young
and great netminders.

Now on to the other half of this trade, Brad Lukowich

In the 1998-99 season, Brad Lukowich led all Michigan
K-Wings, of the IHL, defensemen in assists with 21.He
was second in goals with 8 and points with a total of 29
and he was named to the IHL All-Star team. To me those
are some good stats and he will be a welcome addition to
the Wild. Lukowich was drafted by the New York
Islanders in the fourth round, the 90th overall pick, in
the 1994 Entry Draft. Brad was sent to Dallas on June
2nd, 1997 for a 1997 third round pick.
