BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, February 27, 2006 (QMJHL) – Forward Derick Brassard of the Drummondville Voltigeurs and goaltender Ondrej Pavelec of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles were named offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from February 20th to 26th, 2006.
In two games, Brassard scored four goals, including one game-winner and two shorthanded, and notched three assists, while maintaining a +3 (plus/minus) differential. Last Wednesday versus Moncton, the winger collected three points, including his 100th of the season in a 3-1 win. Two days later, he registered two goals and two assists in a 5-1 win over Lewiston. In both games, Brassard was named the game’s first star. Drummondville is now in the midst of a nine game winning streak. Their next game is tomorrow night as they entertain the Shawinigan Cataractes at the Marcel Dionne Center.
Brett Morrisson (2-6-8) and Claude Giroux (4-2-6) of Gatineau as well as Frédérik Cabana (4-2-6) of Halifax were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Ondrej Pavelec. In three games, the Screaming Eagles goaltender collected two wins, including a shutout, while maintaining a 1.34 goals-against-average and a .963 save percentage. Last Wednesday at home versus the Fog Devils, Pavelec was remarkable making 45 saves in a 3-0 win. At Baie-Comeau on Saturday, he registered his 25th win of the season by defeating the Drakkar 5-2. The next day in Chicoutimi, he was named the game’s second star after stopping 39 shots in a 2-1 loss. Pavelec is presently the front-runner for the Jacques-Plante Trophy, given each year to the goaltender with the best regular season goals-against-average (2.56).
Other players considered for the defensive player of the week award were defencemen Maxim Noreau (2-2-4) of Victoriaville and Kristopher Letang (2-5-7) of Val-d’Or, as well as goaltender Pierre-Alexandre Marion (2-0-0; 120 MP; 1.00 GAA; .971 SAV%) of Drummondville.
