Farmington Hills, Mich., the final slot for the CCHA Championships was filled Sunday when Michigan State defeated Alaska Fairbanks, 7-4, to claim the best of three series. Spartan junior captain Drew Miller notched his second career hat trick for the Green and White, giving him four goals and three assists for the series. The Spartans join Miami, Michigan and Northern Michigan for the Silver Anniversary of the CCHA Championship in Detroit.
The Nanooks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Kelly Czuy scored on the power play just 70 seconds into the contest. The UAF advantage proved to be short-lived when sophomore Chris Mueller knotted the game just 30 seconds later. Miller gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead when he notched a short-handed tally at the 2:50 mark.
Junior blueliner Ethan Graham put Michigan State up by two when he beat UAF netminder Wylie Rogers at 4:30 of the second period. Alaska Fairbanks sophomore Aaron Lee cut the deficit back to one when he potted his second goal of the series 31 seconds later. Michigan State senior David Booth rebuilt the two-goal advantage 22 seconds later before Miller closed the second stanza with his second goal of the evening. The clubs traded a pair of third period markers as senior defenseman Corey Potter and Miller scored for the Spartans while sophomore Kyle Greentree and freshman Braden Walls lit the red light for UAF.
Friday’s semifinal match-ups are now set, with the No. 1 seed Miami battling No. 4 Northern Michigan, while No. 2 Michigan State will meet No. 3 Michigan. Championship week festivities begin Thursday, March 16 with the CCHA Awards banquet at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
