Toronto – The Canadian Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants forward Gilbert Brule is the CHL Player of the Week.
Gilbert Brule was the WHL Player of the Week after scoring four goals and seven points in three wins last week to help the Giants defeat the Prince George Cougars and advance to the second round of the WHL playoffs. Brule recorded a goal and added an assist in a 6-0 road win in Game 3 against Prince George. On Wednesday, Brule scored the game-tying and overtime game-winning goal in a 3-2 win in Game 4. Brule helped the Giants wrap up the series by recording a goal and two assists in a 5-2 home victory in Game 5. The Giants will now play the winner of the Seattle/Portland series. The 19-year-old native of North Vancouver, British Columbia was drafted in the 1st round, 6th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Kevin Beech of the Sudbury Wolves was the OHL Player of the Week after posting a 3-1-0 record, along with a 1.25 goals against average, .960 save percentage and two shutouts in helping the Wolves advance to the second round of the OHL playoffs. In the first round series win over the Kingston Frontenacs, Beech had a goals against average of 1.83 and a save percentage of .945. Philippe Dupuis of the Moncton Wildcats was the top player in the QMJHL last week after scoring six goals and 11 points in three games as the Wildcats defeated the Victoriaville Tigres and will now face the Halifax Mooseheads in the second round of the QMJHL playoffs.
