Latvia came into the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship hoping to at least equal that country's performance at the 2012 version of this tournament.
But Day 1 was probably not the start that they had hoped for, as the Latvians were blanked by Finland, 7-0, in the opening game at Bolshoi Ice Dome in Sochi, Russia. Finland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back, outshooting the Latvians by a 42-21 margin.
One Latvian player that should be able to bring something to the table for his country at this tournament is forward Haralds Egle, who played for the Portland Jr. Pirates of the EJHL during the 2012-13 season. Egle was the leading scorer for the Pirates, netting 22 goals and adding 26 assists for 48 points in 39 games.
Egle spoke with Hockey's Future for this video following the loss to Finland.
