With 14 players picking up points for Team USA in their 7-1 win over Latvia at the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship, it was as good a time as any for defenseman Tommy Vannelli to pick up his first point of the tournament. Vannelli scored the final goal of the game to get off the U18 schneid.
Although Vannelli is the only player on this year's Team USA roster to be listed as having his club affiliation as something other than the U.S. national program, he did in fact spend some time with the NTDP in 2012-13. Vannelli spent much of the season playing for Minnetonka (MN) High School, where he picked up six goals and 14 assists in 25 games for that school. But the Minnetonka native also received a stint with the NTDP club that competed in the USHL, where he registered one goal and one assist in 11 games.
Vannelli is a 95-born who is eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft. He is currently ranked 77th among North American skaters by Central Scouting.
Vannelli spoke with the media, including Hockey's Future, following the Day 4 win over Latvia.
