NAHL Press Release
MINNEAPOLIS – The North American Hockey League announced today that an NAHL At-Large Team will compete as the 18th team at the NAHL Showcase Tournament Sept. 13-16 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
The 20-man At-Large Team will be comprised of one player from each of the league’s 16 teams (not including the USA-17 Team) on each of the four days of the Showcase, with four teams able to dress up to two players on one of the four days. Each team’s coaching staff will determine which of their players will skate for the At-Large Team each day.
The format allows five additional players from each team to participate in the Showcase Tournament over the four-day span.
“The purpose of this event has always been to showcase all of our players and their abilities, and the At-Large Team opens even more doors in terms of college and professional exposure,” said NAHL interim commissioner Mark Frankenfeld. “It’s an ideal way to get more of our players on the ice and recognized.”
One assistant coach from each of the league’s three divisions will coach the At-Large team each day.
The kickoff to the league’s regular season, the NAHL Showcase Tournament will feature all 17 NAHL teams and the At-Large Team. Each team will play four games over the four days with a champion crowned at the conclusion of Saturday’s contests.
Last season, more than 200 college and pro scouts attended the Showcase. In addition, the event eclipsed the 5,000-mark in total attendance.
