BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, September 18, 2006 – Forward Claude Giroux of the Gatineau Olympiques and goaltender Nicola Riopel of the Moncton Wildcats were named offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from September 14 to 17.
In two games, Giroux scored four goals and accumulated three assists, while maintaining a +5 (plus/minus) differential. He has had a hand in seven of his team’s eight goals so far this season. Against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies last Friday, the Philadelphia Flyers’ first round draft pick in 2006, registered three goals while collecting two assists in a 5-1 win. Then on Saturday, Giroux had two points in a 7-3 loss at the hands of the Val-d’Or Foreurs. He is currently in second place among QMJHL scorers, trailing only Jérôme Samson of the Wildcats by one point.
Danick Bouchard (3-3-6) of Shawinigan, Morten Madsen (2-3-5) of Victoriaville and Jérôme Samson (4-4-8) of Moncton were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to rookie goaltender Nicola Riopel. In two games, the Wildcats goaltender collected two wins, while posting his first career shutout. During that span, he maintained a 1.98 goals-against-average and a .957 save percentage. On opening night last Thursday Riopel was sensational, making fifty saves to lead his team to a 2-0 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Then on Sunday, he turned away thirty-nine shots to help his team defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-4.
The other players considered for the defensive player of the week award were defensemen Jean-Philippe Paquet (2-2-4) of Shawinigan and Jason Demers (0-2-2) of Victoriaville and goaltender Pierre-Alexandre Marion (2-0-0 ; 120 MP ; 2.50 GAA ; .932 SAV%) of Drummondville.
