With the 2012-13 CHL season now officially in the books, attention has turned to the 2013 NHL Draft that takes place on June 30th in Newark, NJ. As it happens, the players generally considered to be the top 3 prospects for this draft – Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones, and Halifax Mooseheads forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin – all happen to be players that competed in the CHL this past season.
Both Jones and MacKinnon were considered top prospects coming into the 2012-13 season, so their presence at the top is not all that surprising. The two have both been ranked first overall for stretches of the season, MacKinnon for the first few months, and Jones in the months following his strong performance at the 2013 U20 World Juniors. More recently, MacKinnon seems to have regained his top ranking following his MVP performance at the 2013 Memorial Cup, but certain factors may still favor Jones being the top pick.
Unlike Jones and MacKinnon, however, Drouin wasn't considered a top-5 prospect for this draft at the start of the season. He was still highly ranked, sitting in the 10th position in ISS Hockey's initial rankings back in October. But Drouin quickly rose up the ranks to have his name in the conversation when the top prospects for this draft were discussed. He has done little to suggest that he'll fall much further than the fourth selection, although it seems unlikely that he'll be chosen with the first choice overall.
The three prospects took part in the 2013 NHL Combine this past weekend in Toronto, ON. This Hockey's Future video primarily features the media scrum for Seth Jones from the Combine, but also includes a short segment from Drouin's scrum.
Hockey's Future will be dripping out video interviews from the 2013 NHL Combine over the next few weeks as part of our coverage of the 2013 NHL Draft.
