ROUYN-NORANDA, Monday, November 20, 2006 – The first game of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge was presented tonight at the Dave Keon Arena in Rouyn-Noranda. Team QMJHL outshot Team Russia by a 17-4 margin in the first period and finally solved goaltender Ilia Proskuryakov thanks to Mathieau Perreault’s wrist shot at the 12:13 mark.
Marc-André Gragnani put the QMJHL all-stars up 2-0 five minutes into the second period. Then, Mathieau Perreault scored his second goal of the game, and Francis Paré his first, to put Team QMJHL up by four.
Vadim Shipachev scored with less than three minutes remaining to put the Russians on the board.
Ryan Hillier and Keven Veilleux added goals for the QMJHL all-stars, while Nikita Mikhno did so for the Russian delegation.
“Our players showed that there is a lot of talent in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League,” declared head coach Clément Jodoin. “Some of them will inevitably earn spots on the National junior team.”
Mathieu Perreault and Ilia Proskuryakov were named the ADT players of the game.
The second contest of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge is tomorrow night at the Air Creebec Centre in Val-d’Or.
