John Tavares named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto – The Canadian Hockey League announced today that John Tavares of the Oshawa Generals is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday January 7 after scoring nine goals and 15 points in four games.

Tavares started the week with two goals and two assists in a 6-3 win over the Sudbury Wolves on New Year’s Day. He added two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, and two assists in a 6-5 win over the Kingston Frontenacs on January 5, added a goal and an assist in a 4-2 loss to the Mississauga IceDogs on January 6 and then closed out the week with four goals and an assist to go along with the shootout winner in a 6-5 win over the Belleville Bulls on January 7.

The 16-year-old Oakville native moved into second place in the OHL’s scoring race with 39 goals and 35 assists for 74 points in 37 games. It was the second time that he has been named CHL Player of the Week this season.

Francois Bouchard of the Baie Comeau Drakkar was the QMJHL nominee after scoring two goals and nine points in three games and the WHL nominee was Dylan Yeo of the Calgary Hitmen, who also scored two goals and nine points in three games.
