Tavares Named OHL Player of the Week

Toronto - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Oshawa Generals’ forward John Tavares is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 7, 2007. Tavares continued his strong season by scoring nine goals and adding six assists for 15 points in four games. The native of Oakville, Ontario also finished the week with a rating of plus-6.

Tavares began his week by scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists on New Year’s Day as the Generals defeated the Sudbury Wolves 6-3, at the General Motors Center. He was named the game’s first star for his performance. On January 5, Tavares had his second straight four-point game. He scored two goals, including the game winning goal in overtime, and also had two assists as Oshawa won 6-5 in Kingston. The next night the Generals traveled to Mississauga where they were defeated by the IceDogs 4-2. Tavares was in on both of Oshawa’s goals, scoring once and assisting on the other. On January 7, Tavares capped off his week with a dominating performance scoring four goals and adding an assist in regulation time. He then proceeded to score the game winning goal in a shootout as Oshawa defeated the visiting Belleville Bulls 6-5.

Tavares currently leads the OHL with 39 goals in 37 games and is second in the league in scoring with 74 points. He is the first repeat winner of the OHL Player of the Week for the 2006-07 season having also captured the honour for the week ending December 3, 2006.
