If good things can come in smaller packages, then Victoria Royals defenseman Joe Hicketts is the very embodiment of this adage. The 5'8”, 174-pound defenseman turned in a solid rookie season with the Royals, and has gotten his 2013-14 season and NHL Draft year off to a good start as a member of Canada's Ivan Hlinka squad.
Hicketts and his Canadian teammates copped that country's sixth consecutive gold medal after posting a 4-0 win over Team USA at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Hicketts posted two assists in five tournament games, including a helper on Canada's second goal in the gold medal game which was scored by Jayce Hawryluk.
In his WHL rookie season, Hicketts scored six goals and added 18 assists for 24 points in 67 games. The NHL's Central Scouting took notice of his efforts and included Hicketts on their Futures list for the 2013-14 season.
Hicketts spoke with Hockey's Future following the gold medal victory, a conversation captured in this HF video.
