Toronto-The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Performers of the Month for February, 2007.
Player of the Month – Sergei Kostitsyn, London Knights Kostitsyn was named OHL Player of the Month after leading the league in scoring with nine goals and 26 assists for 35 points in 11 games. The 19-year old right winger recorded at least a point in all 11 games London played during February, leading the team to a 9-2 record. Kostitsyn had eight multi-point games, including a six-point game on February 1 in a 7-6 win over the Guelph Storm in which he was named the game’s first star. He also enjoyed two back-to-back five-point performances against Brampton on February 9 and Erie February 11 and was awarded first star in both games. Kostitsyn had three game winning goals including an overtime winner against Sarnia on February 2. The Montreal Canadians draft pick also finished the month with a plus/minus rating of plus-8. Kostitsyn, a native of Belarus is currently tied for third in league scoring with 115 points in 51 games.
Defenceman of the Month – Drew Doughty, Guelph Storm Doughty was named OHL Defenceman of the Month after scoring six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 11 games. He registered a point in nine of the 11 games played in February including six multi-point games. Doughty scored one shorthanded goal, five power play goals and had a game winning goal. The 17-year old from London had a four point night in a 4-1 win against Owen Sound February 28 and currently leads all OHL defencemen with 70 points in 61 games this season.
Goaltender of the Month – Ryan Daniels, Saginaw Spirit Daniels was named OHL Goaltender of the Month after posting a 1.870 goals against average and a 0.935 save percentage in 11 games. The Pickering native went 8-2-0-1 and posted two shutouts in the month. The first was a 9-0 victory over the Erie Otters on February 3 and then a 7-0 road win February 10 over the Belleville Bulls. Daniels was named the game’s first star in both shutout wins. He was also named the first star of the game in a 2-1 victory over Sarnia when he made 33 saves against the division rival on February 16. The 18-year old Ottawa Senators draft pick is currently sixth among OHL goalies with 34 victories in 56 games.
Rookie of the Month- Patrick Kane, London Knights Kane was named OHL Rookie of the Month after scoring 13 goals and adding 16 assists for 29 points in nine games. The 18-year old recorded at least a point in all nine games this month. The Buffalo, New York native had eight multi-point games during the month, including a five-point night versus Brampton on February 9. He was named a star in seven of nine games. Kane also scored three goals and was named the game’s first star in a 6-5 overtime victory over the Sarnia Sting February 2. He scored two game winning goals in overtime, against Guelph on February 8 and Windsor on February 16. Kane currently leads the OHL scoring race with 129 points in 53 games.
