Desharnais and Blanchard win TELUS player of the week awards

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, March 19, 2007 – Chicoutimi Saguenéens forward David Desharnais and Victoriaville Tigres goaltender Jean-Christophe Blanchard today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from March 12 to 18.

In three games, Desharnais recorded three goals and five assists while maintaining a +1 differential. Furthermore, the Saguenéens forward had a hand in 8 of the team’s 12 goals while taking fourteen shots. His best showing came last Thursday as he registered four points in a 5-3 victory over the Gatineau Olympiques. Desharnais completes the season with a total of 108 points in 61 games. The Saguenéens will now battle the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the first round of the playoffs. Desharnais has 37 career playoff points in 44 contests.

Kelsey Tessier (2-4-6) and Roman Bashkirov (3-2-5) of the Remparts as well as Juraj Mikus (4-3-7) of the Saguenéens were also considered.

The defensive player of the week award goes to Jean-Christophe Blanchard. In three games, the Tigres goaltender registered two wins while maintaining a 2.33 goals-against-average and .944 save percentage. His only loss came yesterday versus the Océanic in overtime. His best showing of the week came against the Olympiques at home on Friday as he stopped 49 shots in a 4-1 win. Blanchard was also named the game’s first star. After collecting five out of a possible six points this week, the Tigres finish second in the TELUS division standings. They will meet the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the first round of the playoffs.

Defensemen T.J. Brennan (2-1-3; +2) of the Fog Devils and Julien Brouillette (1-4-5; +1) of the Saguenéens as well as goaltender Brant Miller (3-2-0; 151 MIN; 1.99 GAA; .938 SAV%) of the Titan were also considered.
