The Editor’s Desk, May, 2007

By Ken McKenna

With May now in full swing and June not far off, Hockey’s Future enters what is for us the busiest and most interesting time of the year.  Two major events related to the coverage we provide at this site, the Memorial Cup Tournament and the NHL Draft, take place in the next 45 days, so we at Hockey’s Future will work to provide our readers with interesting features directly from these events.

For the Memorial Cup, which takes place in Vancouver, British Columbia May 18th through the 27th, HF will have two writers at the event providing interviews and features related to the prospects taking part in the tournament.  This event caps another exciting season in the CHL, the top junior league in the world, so you can be sure that HF will be talking to the newsmakers at this event.

The 2007 NHL Draft will take place in June in Columbus, Ohio.  Over the course of the 2006-07 season, HF has been providing coverage of some of the top prospects available in this draft.  This coverage is now available in one central area, in our NHL Draft Center.  The NHL Draft Center (www.hockeysfuture.com/nhl_entry_draft/) houses all the articles, profiles and rankings of the players that will be chosen in this year’s draft, so be sure to visit this page often over the next several weeks as more and more information is added.

Also related to this year’s draft is our coverage of the NHL Draft Combine that will be held in late May and early June in Toronto, Ontario.  The top prospects for the 2007 NHL Draft gather for workouts run by Central Scouting Services, so this will be an opportunity to get the thoughts of both players and talent evaluators leading up to the draft.

In addition to focusing on tomorrow’s stars, we’ll also take our customary look back to the NHL Draft five years prior.  The NHL team writers will be presenting their view of how each of the 30 clubs fared at the draft table in 2002, so be on the lookout for those articles as the month progresses.

And, as if this weren’t enough, the organizational rankings will be released within the next few days.  Be sure to check out which teams have risen or fallen since the last release of this popular feature.

As an added bonus, in conjunction with the NHL playoff coverage provided by the Versus network, we are partnering with that network on a contest open to our American and Canadian readers.  The contest is simple – just click on the Versus banner that can be found at the very top of any page at hockeysfuture.com, then view the "NHL Defining Moments" as chosen by Versus.  After viewing these highlights, send an e-mail to  playoffsandpayoffs@yahoo.com identifying your selection of the NHL’s Defining Moment from those presented by Versus.  The e-mail should include your highlight choice, plus your name, mailing address and country of residence (one entry per person).  Winners will be chosen at random, with those winners being notified via e-mail at the close of the contest.  Prizes include Versus hats and shirts, as well as All-Star Game Prize Packs.  And all you have to do to for a chance to win is send in an e-mail – how easy is that?

Clearly, May is going to be a fun and informative month at Hockey’s Future.  So be sure to visit the site often for the latest NHL Draft information, as well as your chance to win some prizes.
