The Minnesota Wild brain trust heads to the draft without a first round pick for the first time in franchise history. High expectations buoyed by the acquisition of bona fide stars Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in July 2012 led management to make a somewhat hasty trade as the shortened NHL season waned, sending Johan Larsson, Matt Hackett, this year's first round pick, and next year's second round pick away for Buffalo Sabres captain Jason Pominville. While Pominville is certainly a good player who adds a needed dimension to the offense-starved Wild, the price may have been too high.

The Detroit Red Wings 2013 NHL Draft position should pique the interest of even the most jaded Wings fan. Detroit holds the 18th overall selection, their highest pick since the organization took Martin Lapointe with the 10th overall in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Considering that the Red Wings did not have a first round selection in the 2009, 2011, and 2012 NHL Drafts, having the 18th overall pick in a year that features what is generally considered to be a very deep draft class is cause for excitement.

A disappointing 2012-13 season for the Flyers has left an awkward situation in Philadelphia heading into the offseason. The struggles of the team seem to go hand-in-hand with the struggles of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Meanwhile, former Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky recently won a Vezina Trophy with the Columbus Blue Jackets, less than a year removed from being traded out of Philadelphia.

While he might not sport the offensive credentials that some of his fellow defensemen in the 2013 NHL Draft class possess, U.S. NTDP defender Steve Santini has shown enough in other areas of his game to be considered a potential first round pick in this draft.

Tim Bender - Mannheim

The 2012-13 season started off well for a few German prospects with NHL ambitions. But as it has worn on and culminated in a U18 World Championship tournament where Germany only managed to win one game – albeit the decisive class retainer over Slovakia – it seems as if the competition for this NHL Draft coming out of other countries has just become a tad too much for this year's German prospects to handle.
