Having gone a bit under the radar in recent years in German hockey has been the quiet but steady development of defenseman Jonas Muller. Born in Berlin, he’s developed almost entirely with the Eisbaren Berlin organization, a subsidiary of the same Anschutz Group that owns the Los Angeles Kings. Read more »

Defense and high-scoring Europeans make up the majority of the QMJHL’s top prospects for the 2015 NHL Draft. Four defenders sit in the top 10, as well as forwards born in three different European countries – Russia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Read more »

There’s a renewed energy at Harbour Station this season, the home rink for the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs.

Celebrating its 10th season in the league, the proud franchise has returned to respectability after a down season last year. The team sits second in the Maritimes Division, behind the Moncton Wildcats, and they have enough depth to make a strong playoff push. General Manager Darrell Young, who was hired in March of last year, revamped the team in the off-season, plucking several free agents from Ontario and the United States, but a lot of this season’s success can be attributed to the development of the team’s drafted players. The Can’t-Miss Kid. That’s what they called Bobby Carpenter when he was a 17-year-old at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA in 1981. “Today, 17-year-old Bobby Carpenter of Peabody, Mass., a city of 48,000 some 15 miles north of Boston, is the best high school hockey player in America,” wrote the legendary E.M. Swift in a 1981 Sports Illustrated cover story. “More than that, he’s one of the top amateur prospects in the world. In the NHL Draft in June, Carpenter’s expected to be one of the first six players selected. Read more »

When Daniel Cleary was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the 1997 NHL Draft, it was a slight disappointment for the top-projected prospect, but a tremendous high for hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador. Read more »
