WHL 2013 draft review

The Colorado Avalanche effectively eliminated any drama surrounding the first overall selection at the 2013 NHL Draft by spreading the word weeks in advance that they were leaning toward selecting a forward. True to their word, the Avalanche bypassed Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones in favor of the Halifax Mooseheads’ Nathan McKinnon. In fact, Jones dropped to fourth overall where he was picked up by the ecstatic Nashville Predators.

Philadelphia Flyers 2013 draft review

The Philadelphia Flyers and General Manager Paul Holmgren used the team's six draft picks to accumulate size and toughness but also address areas of need within the organization. The team drafted a total of four defensemen, including Samuel Morin with the 11th overall selection, none of whom are shorter than 6'2. The Flyers also stayed true to their historical form by using their middle and late-round picks on players who are considered long-term projects.

St. Louis Blues 2013 draft review

The St. Louis Blues had only four draft picks in 2013, and were unable to select a player until the 47th overall pick. The Blues already boast high-end skill at the forward positions and tried to improve their defensive prospects in this year's draft.

The Ottawa Senators have done a great job of unearthing NHL-caliber players in the later rounds of the NHL Draft, getting the most out of their late picks to provide support for their top players. The Senators have leaned strongly towards the Swedish junior circuit, a league their scouts are very familiar with, but the organization has also taken chances on hometown kids. General Manager Bryan Murray made a point of drafting hard working, supporting cast-type players in 2013.
