Heading into the 2013 NHL Draft, the Florida Panthers had one of the deeper and more talented groups of prospects in the NHL, including the recent Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau. With eight picks, including the second overall, the team needed to address several deficiencies in their depth chart, the most notable being a center to run the first-line offense and distribute the puck to Huberdeau.

The Chicago Blackhawks entered the 2013 NHL Draft with five draft picks. After trading Dave Bolland to Toronto and Michael Frolik to Winnipeg in exchange for draft picks, the club added eight new prospects to the pipeline in 2013 and a couple extra picks in 2014. Although none of the Blackhawks 2013 selections project to be high-end NHL players, there is versatility among the group and potential to fill complimentary roles in the NHL lineup in a few years.

Management was looking to fill some holes in their talent pool and were willing to pay a high price to move up in the draft to get a specific player. However, the only trade Montreal made was late in the draft, when they traded their 2013 seventh round selection to the Florida Panthers for a seventh round pick in the 2014 NHL draft.

Gustav Olofsson - Minnesota Wild

The Wild's big free agent signings last season may have dented the scouting budget. The Wild stayed pretty close to home this year, not drafting a player out of Europe for the first time in team history. The scouting staff did travel coast to coast in Canada with a studied focus on defense and size, but with an implicit directive of taking the long view with this draft class. Several of these players will be playing at the NCAA level next year and keeping tabs will mean a two hour drive rather than an eight hour flight. It also means that all of these players remain two years away from consideration at the professional level. All in all, it was quite an unspectacular draft that will take much patience to assess properly.
