At the 2011 IIHF U18 tournament in Dresden and Crimmitschau, Germany, more than a few people in the hockey community found themselves raising their eyebrows with respect to a pair of brothers suiting up for Team Norway.

The Anaheim Ducks had a more successful 2013 season than many people expected. After struggling in the 2011-12 season and failing to make the playoffs, the franchise looked ready for a rebuild. However, with a fresh season under new coach Bruce Boudreau in 2013, they surprised everyone and won the Pacific Division. The wealth of prospects that the franchise has are developing well, and a few are starting to poke into the NHL and make an impact.

New Jersey Devils 2013 draft preview

The New Jersey Devils started the lockout shortened 2012-13 season on fire. Following a home-and-home sweep of the Pittsburgh Penguins in February, New Jersey sat atop of the Eastern Conference. Then the injuries started to take their toll. Without key contributors like Dainius Zubrus, Martin Brodeur and Ilya Kovalchuk, the team tumbled down the standings. An inability to score, combined with some terrible luck down the stretch, kept New Jersey out of the playoffs for a second time in three years.

Adaptation to OHL mostly successful for Tolchinsky

Sergei Tolchinsky is one of the series of ’95-born Russian players who crossed the pond last summer to have a better chance of being drafted into the NHL. Some of them didn’t have luck, like Vladimir Ionin, but others managed to win a spot on a team without standing out too much (think about players like Vladimir Bryukvin or Sam Babintsev), while others became impact players. Sergei Tolchinsky belongs to this latter category, with other players like Valentin Zykov and Nikita Zadorov.

Florida Panthers 2013 draft preview

One year after a surprising trip to the playoffs, the Florida Panthers fell to the bottom of the league standings. For a team in transition such a drop is disheartening. There is a however a silver lining to the Panthers poor season, as the second-overall draft pick in 2013 can yield a potential superstar.
