Two Northeast Division clubs among those that helped themselves at 2012 NHL Draft

The 2012 NHL Draft may have been more about depth than star power, however there were still plenty of opportunities for clubs to address their needs. The top ten saw eight defensemen taken with a total of thirteen chosen in the first round. There were a pair of highly touted goalies taken in the first round with a number of potential starters going in each of the subsequent rounds. Up front, there was talent to go around but forwards in general seemed to slip a bit from their projected standing.

In the early going of the 2011-12 season, center Mikhail Grigorenko was considered by some to be the top prospect available for the 2012 NHL Draft.  By season's end, however, the talented Russian was dropping in the rankings, finally being chosen with the 12th selection overall by the Buffalo Sabres.

In what was a popular theme for this year's NHL Draft crop, the Tampa Bay Lightning selected with their top pick one of the prospects that missed a great deal of the 2011-12 season due to an injury.

The U.S. NTDP program has been prolific in recent years in terms of producing high-end NHL Draft prospects, and the 2012 NHL Draft is no exception.  Three players from this program were chosen in the draft's first round, with Winnipeg Jets selection Jacob Trouba being the highest at ninth overall.
