After dropping an opening-day overtime loss to Finland at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, the USA bounced back on Day 2 to take a 4-2 victory over Russia. One of the scoring stars in that game for Team USA was forward Nick Schmaltz, who netted a goal and chipped in two assists for a three-point game.
