History
Greg Nemisz had already achieved quite a bit hockey-wise before joining the Windsor Spitfires in the fall of 2006–during the 2004-05 season, his minor midget team, the Clarington Toros, won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship. Nemisz was then selected seventh overall in the 2006 OHL Priority Draft.
2006-07: This marked the forward’s first season with the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). In 62 games, he tallied 11 goals and 34 points as a rookie.
2007-08: In his second season with Windsor (OHL), Nemisz potted a career-high 34 goals and 67 points through 68 games. He also joined up with the Canadian U20 National club, netting a pair of goals and three points in seven games at the 2010 WJC; he took Gold with Canada at the tournament. Chosen to play in the CHL Top Prospects game.
2008-09: The Spitfires (OHL) forward netted a career-high 36 goals and 77 points through 65 games this season, adding an additional 20 points (8g+12a) in 20 playoff games; he won an OHL title with Windsor this season, as well as the CHL Memorial Cup and an OHL All-Star second Team nod.
2009-10: Nemisz had a bitter sweet fourth season with the Windsor Spitfires. He scored 34 goals (13 power play goals) along with 36 assists and a plus 22 rating in only 51 OHL games. The talented winger was chosen to play for Canada at the World Junior Championship where he scored only one goal but it was to tie the game against the Americans only to lose in the Gold medal. Nemisz suffered a nasty leg injury on February 25, against the Plymouth Whalers when a skate cut his thigh for about 40 stitches. He would miss five weeks of hockey only able to return for the Spitfires' second round series against the Whalers. The strong Spitfires marched through the OHL playoffs winning the finals again for the second straight year. Nemicz scored two goals with ten assists and a minus one rating in 15 OHL playoff games. Windsor would repeat as the Memorial Cup Champions for the second year with Nemisz scoring one goal with four assist for the tournament.
2010-11: Nemisz had good rookie season while finishing fourth in scoring with the Abbottsford Heat. The 20-year-old had 14 goals and 19 assists in 68 AHL games. Nemisz also got his first chance at NHL action playing six late season games with the Flames and picking up an assist. The rookie winger gained the confidence of his coaches, allowing him to receive playing time on the power play and penalty kill where he scored three shorthanded tallies along with five goals on the power play.
2011-12: Nemisz appeared in a pair of December games with the Flames and returned to the NHL in March; spending most of his second pro season with AHL Abbotsford. He was scoreless and plus-one, averaging 7:42 minutes of ice time, in nine games with the Flames. Calgary missed the NHL playoffs. Nemisz scored 13 goals with 16 assists and was plus-five with 29 penalty minutes in 51 games for Abbotsford. The Heat finished second in the West Division and reached the second round in the AHL playoffs. Nemisz was tied for third in scoring for Abbotsford in the playoffs, scoring 2 goals with 4 assists and finishing plus-four with 4 penalty minutes in eight playoff games.
Talent Analysis
Nemisz drives the net hard while showing his soft hands in tight and has solid decision-making skills along with good defensive instincts. The lanky winger needs to increase his overall strength to help the physical side of his game in order to become a power forward in the NHL. The young forward must continue to show improvement to his physical consistency with the Heat and the Flames might have to give him a bigger chance at the NHL level sooner than expected.
Future
Nemisz will be playing his third season in the AHL with the Heat. The big forward must increase his offensive output and play on the Heat's top-two forward lines. If the NHL lockout is settled in time for the 2012-13 season then good offensive results could help Nemisz obtain another chance to play in the Flames' starting line-up this year. The 2008 first rounder is entering the third and final year of his NHL entry level contract and will be playing for a longer term deal.
