History

2006-07: Domestically, Markstrom played in 13 games with a 2.05 GAA and .911 save percentage for Brynas U-18 club and one game with Brynas U-20.

2007-08: Markstrom emerged as a top prospect when he became the No. 1 goaltender with Brynäs in the SEL after spending much of the season with the Brynas’ U-20 team. In seven Elitserien games with Brynas, one of the weaker teams in the league, Markstrom allowed 22 goals with a .888 save percentage. Markstrom was excellent in nine relegation games as Brynas fought to avoid demotion against the top teams in AlSvenskan (the Swedish second tier league). Brynäs managed to stay in the top league largely due to the play Markström’s play, as he had two shutouts and a 1.78 GAA. Playing for Brynas’ U-20 team, he allowed 44 goals in 22 games and also had a pair of shutouts. Markstrom played all six games for the Swedish U18 national team at the WJC tournament. Sweden finished the tournament in fourth place with Markstrom winning four games and losing twice with a 3.04 GAA and .863 save percentage. Markström was voted a top-three player on the team by the Swedish coaches.

2008-09: Though still just eighteen when the season started, Markström was the full-time starter for Brynäs and was one of the Elitserien’s top goalies. In 35 regular season games, he posted a 2.38 GAA and .917 save percentage with three shutouts. He started five games for Team Sweden at the U20 WJC and was 4-1 with one shutout and had a 1.61 GAA and .943 save percentage as the team captured a silver medal.

2009-10: Markstrom put up good numbers in his second full Elitserien season and Brynas once again topped their mark from the previous season, finishing sixth in the twelve-team league just two seasons after being in last place. Playing 43 of Brynas’ 55 games, Markstrom had five shutouts with a 2.01 GAA and .927 save percentage. Markstrom represented Sweden at the U 20 WJC. In five games, he was 4-1 with a 2.21 GAA and .927 save percentage as the team won a bronze medal. Markstrom signed an entry level contract with Florida in March.

2010-11: Markstrom made his NHL debut in a relief appearance in January and split the goaltending chores with Tyler Plante for AHL Rochester in his first pro season in North America. In his only NHL game, Markstrom replaced Scott Clemensen to start the second with the Panthers trailing New Jersey 2-0 and was tagged with the loss; allowing 2 goals on 14 shots in an eventual 5-2 Devils' win. In 37 AHL games with last-place Rochester he was 18-21 and had one shutout with a 2.98 GAA and .907 save percentage.

Talent Analysis

Markström is a tall goaltender that has the ability to look even bigger in net. He is a skilled goaltender with great mental strength as one of his major characteristics. He is cool, yet intensely competitive. Markstrom plays the butterfly style with a good glove and has fine positioning and agility in net. Although he struggled with rebound control and reactions to game speed in the early part of his first season in North America, Markstrom had been adjusting and improving in those areas before his injury.

Future

Markstrom is clearly the top goaltending prospect in Florida’s organization. During the offseason, Florida signed veteran goaltender Jose Theodore, presumably to fight for the number one spot with the Panthers, but cannot be considered the long-term solution. Markstrom will have another year in the AHL to add more seasoning to his game, recover fully from his knee injury, and prepare for his upcoming role as the Panthers goaltender of the future.
