History

2008-09: Nick Cousins was chosen in the second round, 21st overall, of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Cousins played in 5 games for the Trenton Hercs of the OJHL, picking up 1 assist in those games.

2009-10: In his OHL rookie season, Cousins played in 67 games for the Greyhounds. He scored 11 goals and added 21 assists for 32 points. In 5 playoff games, he picked up 1 assist.

2010-11: In 68 games for the Greyhounds, Cousins scored 29 goals and added 39 assists for 68 points. Cousins played for Canada at the 2011 U-18 World Junior Championship, scoring 4 goals and adding 4 assists for 8 points in 7 games.

2011-12: Cousins returned to Sault Ste. Marie for his third junior season with the Greyhounds and made his pro debut at the end of the year, playing for Flyers' AHL affiliate Adirondack. He was scoreless with no penalties in his only game with the Phantoms. Cousins was the leading scorer for the Greyhounds, finishing with 35 goals and 53 assists in 65 games and was plus-one with 88 penalty minutes. The Greyhounds came up just short in their quest for an OHL playoff spot; finishing one point behind Windsor.

 

Talent Analysis

Cousins plays with a combination of toughness and scoring ability that is similar to current Flyer Scott Hartnell, though he does not possess Hartnell's size. The strength of his game is his two-way play and competitiveness all over the ice; at the same time he did lead his junior team with 29 goals. The best parts of his offensive game are his passing and playmaking skills and a willingness to go to high traffic areas to create opportunities.

 

Future

Cousins is playing for the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL in 2012-13. While it will take him two or three years to add the strength and bulk to compete at the NHL level on a nightly basis, Cousins should fit in well as a second- or third-line center with Philadelphia.

The prospect pool for the Philadelphia Flyers is consistently one of the more diminished gatherings of young talent every year, but they rarely miss on top-end talent when given the opportunity to acquire it. Because of their lack of picks and their aggressive style of team-building, it is far more important for the organization to consistently hit on their high draft picks as well as attract some of the better free agent prospects on the market every year.

While the Philadelphia Flyers have not had the most dazzling prospect pool in recent NHL memory, they have had a steady amount of success from the top of their ranks. While consistently trading away first and second round picks does not provide the steadiest foundation from which to build an organization, the Flyers have had almost astonishing success making trades for high-end players who are just hitting their developmental stride.

Hard working depth players populate Philadelphia Flyers prospect pool

While the Philadelphia Flyers prospect pool consistently hovers near the bottom of the league, it is not for a lack of production. A steady stream of graduates has kept the team rotating through young talent since the end of the 2004-05 NHL Lockout. Though they once again lack blue-chip prospects within their pool, most of the weight for the future of the team is carried by young NHL players such as Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, Sean Couturier, and the Schenn brothers, Luke and Brayden.
