History
Before joining USA Hockey, Ryan Stoa played at Bloomington’s Kennedy High School. During the 2002-03 season, he earned All-Lake Conference Honorable Mention honors. He joined the USNTDP for the 2003-04 season where he was fourth on the U-17 team in overall scoring. He also played for Team USA’s gold medal team at the 2003 U-17 Four Nations Cup. He would turn in another fruitful season during 2004-05, where he again ranked fourth in overall scoring with 54 points (19g, 35a). He saw international tournament play for the second straight year, suiting up for two of Team USA’s gold medal teams, at the 2004 U-18 Four Nations Cup and at the 2005 World U-18 IIHF Championships.
2007-08: After appearing in only two games, recording a goal and an assist in the process, Stoa suffered a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 13 against Michigan. He was named team captain for the University of Minnesota entering the 2008-09 season.
Talent Analysis
At 6'3 and a bit over 200 pounds, Stoa has the potential to develop into an effective power forward in the future. He is a good skater who possesses deceptive speed despite his size, and has a great set of fundamental skills. Stoa does a good job using his body to protect the puck, which helps him to be effective down low and in the corners. He is a good forechecker but also has a bit of a scoring touch. Stoa has shown himself to be a more effective setup man, but he will find ways to bury the puck.
Future
Stoa is turning pro in 2009-10.
