History

Won two minor hockey national championships in the US. Was named to the Second OHL Rookie All-Star Team in 2003-04. Chose to play in the OHL instead of the US Under 17 team after playing for the Detroit Honey Baked Midget team. Was a bit of a surprise when he was overlooked for Team USA at the 2004-05 World Junior tournament. An injury suffered at the 2005 CHL Top Prospects Game took away his shot at the OHL scoring title as he ended up missing several weeks and had entered the game in a third place tie in scoring.

Talent Analysis

The combination of size and skill that all teams seem to be constantly after, Ryan’s forte is his ability to turn a scoring play into a scoring chance. Combining soft hands and excellent vision and poise, Ryan excels at protecting the puck with his large frame and cycling along the boards.

Though it continues to improve, his skating is still a hindrance and that limits both his play away from the puck and his ability to be a consistent physical presence. If he doesn’t constantly keep his feet moving, his game loses its effectiveness in all three zones of play.
