History
Playing high school hockey for Boston College High, Brian O'Hanley was twice named a Catholic Conference All-Star and was named BC High's Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 2002-03 for his performance in hockey and baseball. O'Hanley was also named to the Boston Globe's "Super Team" and the Boston Herald's "Dream Team" his senior season at BC High.
Committing to Boston College shortly after the Catholic Conference Tournament, O'Hanley was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the ninth round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Before attending Boston College, O'Hanley played a season of prep hockey with Salisbury School, where O'Hanley was named to the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association's Division I West All-Star Team. O'Hanley was also awarded Salisbury's Roswell H. Rudd Hockey Award at the Richard T. Flood Athletic Medal An assistant captain of the Crimson Knights O'Hanley scored 11 goals and 28 assists in 26 games, compiling an impressive +49 and firing 109 shots on net.
2006-07: In his junior year at Boston College (Hockey East), O’Hanley played in 36 games with the club, including 22 league games. He registered five points (2g+3a) and finished the season with a +5 plus/minus rating. He notched an assist in each of BC’s two NCAA Tournament victories.
2007-08: O’Hanley played in one game with Boston College (Hockey East) this season, recording an assist. He then joined the Fresno Falcons (ECHL) where he recorded two assists in 12 games with the club.
Talent Analysis
O'Hanley is an offensive defenseman who has a hard shot with a quick release. Possessing decent speed, O'Hanley can pick the puck off the boards well, stickhandles well, and makes good outlet passes.
A power play weapon, O'Hanley has improved his defensive play and physical play the past two seasons, but must still improve in these areas to become a solid two-way defenseman at the collegiate or pro level.
A natural athlete, O'Hanley also has tremendous hockey sense, especially on offense.
Future
O'Hanley enters Boston College with a chance to become a regular as a freshman, with the further potential to serve regularly on the Eagles power play. Before O'Hanley graduates, he should be one of Hockey East's top offensive defensemen.
With four years of college hockey to work with, O'Hanley should at least become a solid offensive defenseman at the AHL level, but the ninth round pick does have a real shot at playing in the NHL if he gains strength, improves his quickness and defense.
