History
Butler played a significant role in the Musketeers’ run for the Clark Cup. He finished second on the team among defensemen in scoring with 28 points (6 goals, 22 assists) in 60 appearances. He also led the USHL in plus/minus with a +36. Butler’s outstanding season performance earned him a selection to the All-USHL First Team. He was also a member of Team USHL in the 2005 USHL Prospect/All-Star Game.
Talent Analysis
Butler is a mature offensive defenseman that is reliable in his own zone. He was a team leader at the University of Denver this past season, setting an example for a very young team. As a well-rounded player, he works well in tight spaces and makes the first pass well.
Future
He will start the season with AHL Portland, and stands to be one of Buffalo’s first call-ups. His maturity and consistency may force the Sabres to find a spot for him, but if not he can serve as an anchor for the Pirates.
