History

After winning an AJHL championship with the Drayton Valley Thunder in 2002, MacArthur burst on to the WHL scene as an undrafted midget in 2002-03. Surprising the Tigers staff with a four-inch growth spurt, the now 6’0”, 185-pound Lloydminster, Alberta native scored 23 goals and 75 points in 70 games. After being selected by Buffalo in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft, MacArthur returned from Sabres training camp to become the third leading scorer on the WHL’s highest scoring team with 35 goals and 40 helpers. His production was not overlooked, as he was named to Team WHL for the 2003 RE/Max Canada Russia Challenge.

With a knack for netting clutch goals, he was key component to the run-and-gun Tigers WHL title win, and subsequent entry into the Memorial Cup finals. At the tournament in Kelowna, BC, MacArthur was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team after posting a goal and three assists in four games. He finished his 20 game 2004 playoff season with eight goals and ten assists.

Talent Analysis

Despite possessing several quality attributes, MacArthur is a bit of a man without a country.  He is a quality offensive player, but not a dependable scorer.  He is a scrappy player, without the size to be a true force.  Having worked to develop as a defensive forward, his niche is likely as a third liner that can chip in with some scoring.

Future

Having played in 56 games with Buffalo, including 36 last year, MacArthur is nearly graduated from being considered a prospect.  He will again have the opportunity to contribute for the Sabres if he can show consistency and define a role for himself.
