History
After two seasons with St. Paul's prep school in New Hampshire, MacDonald joined the New England Jr. Coyotes of the Eastern Junior Hockey League in 2003-04. MacDonald started the season as one of the team's weaker defensemen, but became one of the team's top defensemen having improved his skating and body checking.
Recognizing MacDonald's improvement, the San Jose Sharks selected MacDonald in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft with the 225 pick overall.
Talent Analysis
New England Jr. Coyotes head coach Lincoln Flagg noted that MacDonald is a defenseman with an excellent outlet pass who rarely turns the puck over in his own zone. In the offensive zone, MacDonald has a hard point shot.
Flagg also says that MacDonald is an aggressive defenseman who plays a physical game, as well as a solid work ethic.
Future
Long-term, MacDonald has an outside shot to become a physical defensive defenseman.
