History
Pre-draft: The Buffalo Sabres dipped into NHL bloodlines with their last pick in the 2004 draft, selecting Dylan Hunter of the OHL’s London Knights in the 9th round (273rd overall). The Petrolia, Ontario native returned to OHL play in 2003-04 twenty pounds lighter, nearly doubling his pervious year’s production while posting career marks in all offensive categories, including a +35 rating. He played the entire season on the top line, as well as the #1 power play. His renewed confidence led to 26 goals, with his 79 points good for third on the team and 13th in the OHL. His point total was better than those of teammates and 2004 first round picks Rob Schremp (75) and David Bolland (67). He was named to the OHL’s Third All-Star Team.
Hunter, the London Knights all time leader in assists and games played, signed a three-year entry-level deal with Buffalo on 6/1/06.
Talent Analysis
Hunter has good hands and is willing to work in front of the net, despite not being a natural scorer. His skating and agility are suspect, but he can be serviceable in those areas. Like Patrick Kaleta, he can be a contributor with his energy, work in the corners, and the ability to chip in an opportunistic goal.
Future
Hunter will continue in the AHL with the Portland Pirates, and needs to work on improving his skating and defense. His is in the final year of his entry-level contract.
