History
McBain attended the USA Hockey Select 15 and 16 camps.
2003-04: McBain played in 73 games for Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, recording 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) helping the team achieve a record of 63-3-7.
2004-05: McBain made an immediate impression with the U-17 team. In 62 games McBain recorded 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) and 42 PIM. He also recorded an assist at the Four Nations Cup and was named the Most Outstanding Defenseman. He also played in the 2005 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, recording a goal and three assists.
2005-06: McBain played a very strong season for the U-18 team. In 55 games McBain recorded 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) and 41 PIM. His 30 points were the second most for a defenseman on the U-18 squad. He also had six power play goals, the second most for a U-18 defenseman. McBain also played in 21 games against NCAA opponents, recording six points (three goals, three assists) and 33 PIM.
2006-07: At the Univ. of Wisconsin, McBain appeared in 36 games as a freshman and scored three goals (all on the power play and one of which was a game winner), and added 15 assists. That led the Badger defense in scoring and tied him for fifth on the team overall, despite missing time for the World Juniors where he represented the U.S. and helped them to a bronze medal.
2007-08: McBain improved on last year’s numbers with Wisconsin, scoring five goals and adding 19 assists while cutting his penalty minutes in half to 18. The sophomore blueliner spent most of the season paired with freshman Ryan McDonagh, helping the new Badger grow accustomed to the speed and skill of the college game.
2008-09: McBain has become one of college hockey’s best blueliners. He was a guiding force on a Wisconsin team that battled for the top spot in the WCHA. McBain was in the running as a Hobey Baker Award candidate, and was second in scoring by a defenseman in the NCAA with 37 points in 40 games. He was named WCHA Player of the Year. Joined Albany at the end of the year for 10 games.
Talent Analysis
McBain is an offensive defenseman with decent size. He has good puck handling skills and a good sense of where the puck needs to be.
Future
Forgoing his senior year to turn pro for 2009-10. It wouldn’t be out of the question to expect McBain to jump right to the NHL. But he's likely headed for Albany.
