History

Jan Mursak was drafted in the sixth round of the 2006 draft.

2003-04: Mursak debuted for HK Maribor of the Slovenian League. In 14 games Mursak recorded six points (three goals, three assists) and 16 PIM.

2004-05: Mursak put together a very solid second season for HK Maribor. In 24 games Mursak recorded 45 points (16 goals, 29 assists) and helped get the team into the playoffs. In six playoff games, Mursak scored two goals with no assists and six PIM. Mursak also played for Team Slovenia at the World U-18 B-Level championships. In five games, Mursak recorded three points (one goal, two assists) and four PIM.

2005-06: Mursak left his native Slovakia to join Budejovice of the Czech U-20 League. In 43 games Mursak recorded 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) and 32 PIM. He helped his team reach the playoffs, and in five games, Mursak notched no goals, two assists, and two PIM. He then proceeded to play for his native Slovenia in two tournaments. In the World U-18 B-Level Championships Mursak played in five games, recording two points (one goal, one assist) and eight PIM helping Slovenia win a silver medal. Then, in the World U-20 B-Level Championships, Mursak recorded five points (three goals, two assists) in five games.

2007-08: Mursak saw time with two OHL clubs this season, splitting between Saginaw and Belleville. In 26 games with the Spirit, the winger recorded 26 points (6g+20a) and added another 38 points (11g+27a) in 31 games with the Bulls. He netted another nine goals and 15 assists in 21 playoff games with Belleville.

2008-09: Mursak appeared in 51 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in his first pro season, scoring 2 goals, 7 assists for 9 points. He notched 1 assist in 6 playoff games.

2009-10: In 79 games with Grand Rapids, Mursak scored 24 goals and 18 assists for 42 points. He represented Slovenia in the Division I World Championships, where he scored 5 goals, 2 assists for 7 points in 5 games.

2010-11: Mursak split the 2010-11 season between the AHL and NHL. He had another successful season for the Griffins, playing in 54 games while scoring 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points. Received a call-up to Detroit when the team was plagued by injuries where he participated in 19 games and notched a goal. During his NHL stint, he showed himself capable of using his speed to be a skilled two-way forward.

 

Talent Analysis

He is an excellent skater and has a very well-developed hockey sense. Mursak plays the game with lots of intensity and is willing to go the extra mile to get the goal.

 

Future

Mursak projects as a third line winger with offensive upside. Could potentially fill in a top 6 spot if needed. He will begin the 2012-13 season battling for a spot on Detroit’s 3rd and 4th lines, likely rotating in and out of the line-up.
