History
2005-06: McCarthy played nearly his entire freshman season on Boston University’s fourth (energy) line with sophomores Brian McGuirk (CBJ) and Ryan Weston. He posted four points (two goals, two assists) in 32 games this season. Both of his goals came against archrival Boston College. McCarthy scored his first collegiate career goal back on December 2nd, but his most memorable goal (his second) came back on March 18, when he notched the equalizer in the Terrier’s eventual 2-1 over their Commonwealth Avenue rivals in the Hockey East Championship game.
Talent Analysis
McCarthy is a tough, competitive centerman who grew into one of Boston University’s most effective penalty killers this season. He possesses loads of energy, a great work ethic and is a relentless battler. He is very aggressive on the forecheck and doesn’t shy away from the physical aspects of the game. McCarthy is a powerful skater with good speed. The defensive side of his game is quite good, taking very good care of his own end and showing a willingness to block shots. McCarthy is a player who is difficult to play against, particularly along the boards and in the corners where he has proven to be very effective. He possesses a good, hard shot and can get pucks off very quickly. While McCarthy isn’t likely to become a high-scoring forward, his offensive production should continue to increase with the growth and development of his game.
Future
McCarthy is in his senior year at Boston University.
