Jonathan Tremblay

Prospect Grade: 5.0 D  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Tremblay became a full-time player for Bathhurst in 2002-03 as the premier fighter of the QMJHL. In 62 regular season games, Tremblay racked up 232 penalty minutes, nowhere close to league-leading Baie-Comeau defenseman Marc-Andrey Roy's 653 penalty minutes. Although 22 in penalty minutes in the "Q," most starting goalies equaled or surpassed Tremblay's offensive output of one assist, including first overall draft pick Marc-Andre Fleury with two assists. Only two players (excluding goalies) in the "Q" who had only one point played more games: Shawinigan defenseman Paul-Andre Bergeron (one goal in 64 games) and Sherbrooke defenseman Brandon Roach (one assist in 64 games.)

Tremblay also played in nine play-off games for Acadie-Bathurst, but was scratched for two contests. Scoreless in nine games, Tremblay did manage 45 penalty minutes, fourth in "Q" play-off penalty minutes despite playing fewer games than all four in front of him, including teammate Ondreg Watulok with 47 penalty minutes in 11 games.

Despite lacking a knack for offense, or defense, Tremblay was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft with the 201st pick overall.

Talent Analysis

Currently, Tremblay's lone major talent is his fighting ability. Considered the top fighter in the QMJHL, Tremblay is one of the few players in each league that has a true knock-out punch.

However, Tremblay is a major project as far as most other skills are concerned. Tremblay's skating needs a great deal of work, and the pugilist's stick skills also need improvement. Potentially a decent body checker, Tremblay's skating prevents this aspect from being fully developed. Hockey's Future QMJHL writer Ryan Milley says, "...but if it were just based on skill, he (Tremblay) would be playing in a beer league somewhere."

Future

Unlike Adam Nittel before him, Tremblay has not put up any offense at the major junior level.
