History
Coming from the famed hockey school of Notre Dame, Fredheim has the right pedigree to be a professional hockey player. He is a bit of a local boy, coming from Campbell River in the Northern Vancouver Island region, so his family is only a few hours drive and a ferry ride away from seeing him play if he ever makes it to the big leagues. The blueliner appeared in 50 games this past season, totaling 17 points with two goals and 15 assists, as well as 28 penalty minutes.
2006-07 Season: Fredheim was a member of the predominantly young Colorado College team. The Campbell River, BC native played in 23 games this season amassing four points (one goal, three assists). His first collegiate point, an assist, came back on Nov. 18 versus Minnesota State-Mankato. Fredheim’s first and only goal of the season came on Feb. 10 in the Tigers 2-2 tie with St. Cloud State.
2007-08: Fredheim got into 34 games with Colorado College this season and showed overall improved play throughout the season. It was a stellar developmental year.
Talent Analysis
Fredheim is a tall, lanky defensive defenseman who is noted for his big, powerful slapshot. He’s a smart player who keeps things pretty simple and is very solid positionally. He makes great use of his large frame and long reach, but still needs to add strength. Despite his need for more physical strength, Fredheim is strong on his skates and has shown that he can be difficult to move off of the puck. He is a fierce competitor who isn’t afraid to play the body is quite good in his play along the boards and in the corners. Fredheim possesses good puck skills and can make nice outlet passes, though he could stand to be a bit more patient with the puck. He is defensively sound, effectively taking away passing/shooting lanes and has shown a willingness to block shots. Some added size and strength would go a long way to help improve many of Fredheim’s weaknesses as his collegiate career goes along.
Future
Fredheim seems to be improving with each year but remains several years away from stepping into the NHL even under the best expectations. He seems likely to play out his college eligibility before moving to the professional ranks. At this time his peak seems to be as a top six defender, but that’s a long way away for this project prospect.
