History

Playing for a bad PEI team this year, and not heavily hyped before the season, Gragnani may not have been on the map of many fans until the U-18 World Championships, but he’s attracted the attention of scouts all season long. Gragnani logged huge minutes on the PEI blue line and played in all situations, first line power play and penalty kill units. He needs to bulk up a bit, but that should not be an issue with his frame.

2006-07: Gragnani ranked fourth with QMJHL Prince Edward with 68 points and finished third on the team with 46 assists. With his last season with Prince Edward, he finished his QMJHL campaign with 193 points.

2007-08: Gragnani was called up to Buffalo for two games, but was held scoreless in each contest. As a member of AHL Rochester, Gragnani scored his first professional goal vs. Hamilton on Oct. 5 and scored two points one month later in his first game against Syracuse on Nov. 5. He had a five-game point streak from Oct. 28 to Nov. 9 and a career-high 10-game point streak from Feb. 9 to Mar. 2. He was named 2008 Amerks’ Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Player. Gragnani skated 6:28 in his NHL debut in Buffalo’s 4-3 loss to the NY Rangers on Feb. 23. He tallied a four-point night against Hamilton on Jan. 12 to earn first star honors.

Talent Analysis

Gragnani is a well-rounded defenseman who plays with great tenacity.  While he does not have one particular attribute that stands out, he is very capable and consistent.  He is a solid passer, and plays with intelligence in the defensive zone.  Though he is not an enforcer type, he is willing to sacrifice his body.

Future

After a very good season with former AHL affiliate Rochester, Gragnani is poised to take his game to the next level, but faces a logjam in Buffalo.  He got a taste of the NHL in two games with the Sabres last year, and may be called up if the need arises.
