History

2005-06: The 6’3/210 lbs. defenseman from Livonia, MI posted ten points (all assists) in 39 appearances this season. Mitera, a CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention, was one of three University of Michigan Wolverines who represented the United States at the 2006 IIHF WJC in Vancouver.

2006-07: posted 1 goal, 17 assists, 52 PIM, and a plus-23 while playing in 41 games for Michigan.

2007-08: In 43 games for Michigan he posted 2 goals, 21 assists, a plus-30, and 60 penalty minutes.

2008-09: Played in only 8 games for Michigan, posting 1 goal and 2 assists. Joined the Iowa Chops of the AHL in the spring where he posted 2 assists in 5 games.

2009-10: In his first full professional season, Mitera split time between the AHL and ECHL, playing for both Abbotsford and San Antonio of the AHL, where he posted a total of 3 assists in 32 games, while posting 3 goals and 11 assists in 36 games for the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.

2010-11: Mitera appeared in 71 games for AHL Syracuse in his second pro season. More of a stay-at-home defenseman, Mitera topped 20 points in a season for the first time since his junior season in college with 6 goals and 16 assists for the Crunch. He had 50 PMs. and his -15 plus/minus was unsightly but could be partially attributed to playing significant minutes for the Crunch, who finished sixth in the AHL's East Division and did not make the playoffs. Mitera was obtained by Montreal in a trade for defenseman Mathieu Carle in July 2011.

Talent Analysis

A strong-skating defensive blueliner, Mitera is not flashy. He won’t hesitate to send an opposing player into the boards, nor will he hesitate to send the puck up ice for a quick counter-attack. Mitera will never put up gaudy offensive numbers, but he is mainly asked to prevent goals, rather than score them. He will need to continue to refine his defensive game to continue to fit in at the pro level.

Future

Mitera was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens in July, 2011 and is set to debut with Hamilton for the 2011-12 season.
