History
Raymond was one of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s top scorers, posting 27 goals and 62 points in 57 games. Last season, on a team loaded with talented players, he stood out as a clutch performer. Six of his goals were game winners for the Kodiaks.
Began play at Minnesota-Duluth (WCHA) in the 2005-06 season.
Few players meant more to their team in 2006-07 than Mason Raymond did to Minnesota-Duluth. The Cochrane, AB native led the Bulldogs in scoring with 46 points (14 goals, 32 assists) as well as several other statistical categories including goals and assists.
2007-08: The season was a successful one for Raymond, who split his time between the Canucks and Manitoba Moose (AHL). In 49 NHL games, Raymond tallied nine goals and 12 assists.
Talent Analysis
Raymond is a somewhat undersized winger with elite speed. Despite the significant amount of upper-body muscle Raymond has added since being drafted in 2005, he still has a slight build compared to most NHL players. His lack of size is his biggest weakness as he is routinely knocked off his feet, or at least off the puck, by bigger defenders. Fortunately he is extremely fast and very few defenders can keep up with him long enough to hit him. Raymond also possesses good puck handling skills although he sometimes has a tendency to over handle the puck instead of taking an opportunity himself. Raymond will score most of his goals on the powerplay or odd-man rushes when he can most take advantage of his skating ability.
Future
Raymond demonstrated at times during the 2007-08 season that he can score at the NHL level. If he is able to consistently string together good performances, there is nothing stopping him from becoming a full-time NHL player who sees second-line ice time and power play minutes.
