Ryan Daniels

Prospect Grade: 6.0 D  (About Prospect Grades)

History

2004-05: Ryan Daniels spent the majority of 2004-05 in the OPJRA with Pickering.  He posted a 3.33 GAA in 30 games played.  Despite less than impressive numbers, the Saginaw Spirit needed an extra goaltender down the stretch and Daniels was called upon to fill in.  He appeared in seven regular season matches and one playoff game.

2005-06: Daniels played a backup role to over-age goaltender Francois Thuot.  Daniels played 26 games with a 16-10 record behind a 4.13 GAA and a .889 save percentage.  He captured the F.W. Moore Trophy with the top GAA among rookie goaltenders, and was named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team, impressive accomplishments for Daniels, who was only 17-years old at the time.  Daniels also received an invitation to the 2006 CHL Top Prospects game and didn’t allow a goal in the 27 minutes that he played.  Daniels was in the same boat as several draft-eligible goaltenders who often find themselves on the bench in favor of older, more seasoned goaltenders in the CHL. However, he took advantage of the opportunities he was given, showing flashes of outstanding play.  In the month of October, Daniels recorded five straight wins and was named the OHL Goaltender of the Month with a 1.57 goals against average, and a stellar .955 save percentage. However, following October his performance dipped somewhat.

2006-07: With Thuot moving on, Daniels became the undisputed No. 1 goaltender for Saginaw.  He ended up becoming a workhorse goaltender playing 3,553 minutes, second in the OHL.  Daniels bested his award winning GAA, posting a 2.94 average to go along with 38 wins, two shutouts and a .907 save percentage in a whopping 60 games played.  He was named OHL Goaltender of the Month in October when he went 9-1 while recording a 2.38 GAA and a .928 save percentage.  But as impressive as he was in the regular season, Daniels was unable to replicate in the playoffs.  Saginaw finished second in the West Division, but were upset by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds losing in a six-game series.  Daniels played in four of the six games posting a 3.26 GAA and a dismal .854 save percentage while dropping three of the four contests.

2008: Attended Thrashers prospect camp.

Talent Analysis

Daniels is a solid positional goaltender with good fundamentals and a quick strong glove hand.  He reacts well and has excellent instincts that help him to make difficult saves.  Daniels has good positioning and is calm under pressure in the crease.  He is a butterfly goaltender who can also play a stand-up style.  His lateral movements are strong, but he sometimes over-anticipates on the play.

Future

Daniels is still eligible for junior and will most likely spend another season in the OHL developing his game.
