History
2003-04: Was a key member of the gold medal winning Team Ontario in the under 17 tournament where he scored 8 points in 6 games. He was an assistant captain on Team Canada in the August 2004 under 18 championships and scored 5 points in 5 games.
2004-05: Played in the 2005 CHL Top Prospects game. Did very well in the skating categories in the skills contest. Drafted 15th overall, in 2005 by the New York Islanders.
2005-06: Scored 77 points in 61 games with Erie in the OHL. Played for Canada st the WJC in Vancouver beating out Kris Chucko for the final roster spot.
2006-07: Traded to Saginaw from Erie but suffered an ankle injury and a season ending knee injury. Won a second consecutive gold medal at the WJC in Sweden with Canada. HIs NHL rights were traded to Edmonton along with Swede Robert Nilsson in exchange for Ryan Smyth.
2007-08: A very frustrating season for the player and the organization as O’Marra didn’t take well to his demotion to the ECHL. There he was a league All-Star and soon worked his way back to the AHL but it appeared as thought the Oilers were sending a message to O’Marra.
Talent Analysis
He is a skilled center with a good set of wheels. He handles the puck well and has a very good shot. He can score from many areas of the ice and doesn’t shy away from playing in traffic. Exceptional in the faceoff circle, he could be a player that is counted on to take defensive zone draws on a regular basis.
O'Marra is at his best when he is playing with a physical edge to his game. Banging bodies, creating turnovers and playing tough in the corners or in front of the net. He’s a natural center but has shown the ability and the comfort to play on the right wing as well as he did with Team Canada.
Future
Projects to be a third-line center in the NHL who is able to shutdown the opposition, throw the body, take the key faceoffs and chip in offensively from time to time.
