Steven Zalewski

Prospect Grade: 6.0 C  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Playing for New Hartford High School, Zalewski was named the New York State DII High School Player of the Year in 2002-03.

Transferring to Northwood School for a year of prep school, Zalewski was named the team captain and led the team in scoring with 32 goals and 34 assists in 40 games.

Committed to play for Clarkson of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Zalewski was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft with the 153rd pick overall.

2006-07: Zalewski had a strong junior season with Clarkson, and finished fourth on his team with a total 34 points in 39 games. Of 16 total goals on the season, he had four game-winning goals and six on the power play. One of his biggest strengths was his consistent play, where he regularly contributed offensively and was strong in the face-off circle. Zalewski played with confidence, was strong on the puck and also appeared to benefit from work on his strength and skating. He has shown steady progress since his freshman season with the Golden Knights.

Talent Analysis

Zalewski is a strong two-way center who is strong on the puck, has good playmaking abilities and a good work ethic.

Future

His offensive capability and defensive awareness should make him an asset at the next level, though he may not see more than third or fourth line duty in the NHL. Zalewski has another season to go before he wraps up his college career, however, and with continued work, he has a good shot at a pro career.
