History

Tom Pyatt is another one of the Rangers' prospects that has a notable older brother in the NHL, but unlike those above him, Tom is not particularly similar to his older brother Taylor. The Vancouver Canucks forward was once a prized prospect because of a remarkable combination of size and speed. Younger brother Tom is five inches shorter, and not as fleet of foot, but makes up for it with pure skill and an impressive work ethic.

The younger Pyatt brother spent his entire junior career with the OHL Saginaw Spirit. At first a more defensive forward, Pyatt became more offensively minded for the 2006-07 season. His statistics reflected the change in his outlook, registering more than a point and a half a game in his final junior season.

2007-08: Pyatt began the season with the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. He got off to a slow start, and although Pyatt began to pick up his game, a November injury set him back. Upon his return, Pyatt was not very effective, and he was sent to the ECHL Chartlotte Checkers at the end of February to regain his game. In the 16 games Pyatt played with the ECHL team, the center posted 15 points, and appeared to regain his confidence. Pyatt was recalled for the AHL playoffs.

Talent Analysis

Heart and soul player with good offensive instincts and good hands. Can play both ways, but his size and strength has thus far made for a difficult adjustment to professional play.

Future

Pyatt has second line NHL potential, but has the defensive ability to be a checker as well. He will have to continue to get stronger on the puck and quicker in all facets of his game. Given his work ethic, Pyatt should be a candidate for promotion to the NHL within 2-3 years.
