History
2002-03: Kana began playing in the Extraliga U-18 Czech league at age 15 for HC Vitkovice. In 44 games, he posted 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) and 72 PIM. He also played in two playoff games, recording two goals and four PIM.
2003-04: Kana played in only nine games for HC Vitkovice in the Extraliga U-18 league, recording 11 points (two goals, nine assists) with 33 PIM. He then played in seven playoff games, posting nine points (four goals, five assists) with a plus/minus of five. The reason Kana only played in nine games in the U-18 league was that the young 16 year old played in 50 games for HC Vitkovice in the Extraliga U-20 league. In his 50 games, Kana posted 19 points (12 goals, seven assists) with 80 PIM.
2004-05: Kana remained in the U-20 league in the 04-05 season. In 46 games, Kana notched 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) with a plus/minus of seven and 155 PIM. He was even made one appearance for HC Vitkovice’s main team where he was held off the scorecard. Kana then played for Team Czech Republic at the U-18 World Junior Championships. In seven games, Kana recorded six points (two goals, four assists) and eight PIM. He also had a plus/minus of three.
2005-06: Kana started the year in the U-20 league. Playing in five games, Kana recorded seven points (four goals, three assists) with a plus/minus of nine. It became clear that Kana was ready to play in the main league. In 42 games in the Extraliga Kana recorded 14 points (five goals, nine assists) with 50 PIM. He proceeded to play for Team Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships. In six games, Kana scored two goals.
2006-07: Kana spent the entire season in the Czech Extraliga, building upon the previous year’s development. He again was used in penalty killing and defensive situations, and was one of his team’s better point producers. Kana was nearly transferred to Owen Sound of the OHL, but the agreement fell through at the last minute. Vitkovice ended up loaning him to second division club Mlada Boleslav for a brief playoff run.
2007-08: Kana played for four different clubs in North America and the Czech Republic. He started with the Alaska Aces (ECHL), playing 12 games with the club (two goals) before deciding to head back to the Czech. He then centered for HC Sareza Ostrava (CzRep-2), where he recorded three goals in eight games; another eight games with HC Vitkovice Steel (CzRep) yielded a goal and an assist. He finished the season with HC Slovan Ustecti Lvi Usti and Lebem (CzRep), scoring four goals and four assists in 17 games.
Talent Analysis
Kana is gritty and fearless and will tenaciously go after the puck in the corners all game long. His aggressive mindset and all-out effort on the ice earns him instant respect with both his coaches and teammates. Kana has also excelled on the penalty kill, regularly playing with the first unit on both 5-on-4 and 5-on-3 disadvantages. His offensive game still leaves a bit to be desired, but he has shown flashes of potential and scouts are confident he has considerable upside in that department. If he continues to develop and maximizes his potential, he could become one of those invaluable players that every team covets: the gritty guy who relishes doing the little things to help his team win hockey games.
