History

2007-08: A multitude of injuries (burst appendix, concussion and a pair of shoulder problems) significantly hampered Cormier throughout most of the season. However, he was finally able to fully regain his stride and get his overall game back on track late in the year, which was punctuated with an impressive post-season, in which he led Rimouski in scoring with four goals and nine points in nine games. In the regular season, he scored 18 goals and 23 assists, and posted 84 PIM's in 51 games. While his draft status was all over the map due to his injuries, New Jersey used one of their two second round draft picks on Cormier.

2008-09: Cormier struggled last season due to injury, however in his third full QMJHL season, he was able to put that rough 2007-08 year behind him and rebound to have a fantastic season for the Rimouski Oceanic. His numbers improved across the board, as he finished fourth in team scoring with 23 goals and 28 assists in 54 games. Cormier earned himself a gold medal on Team Canada's entry at the World Junior Championship this past winter, where he excelled as a physical, checking-line torpedo. He had a strong playoff for Rimouski, and an even better Memorial Cup performance, as one of the leaders and top players on the team.

2009-10: Fresh of captaining Team Canada at the World Junior Championships, Cormier became a focus for negative attention globally when he threw a vicious elbow into the face of Quebec defender Mikael Tam during a QMJHL game. Cormier was suspended for the remainder of the QMJHL season and made a subdued start to his pro career with a quiet 9 playoff games with the Chicago Wolves of the OHL.

2010-11: Injured while blocking a shot in a preseason game, Cormier missed half the season and eventually made his NHL debut after an 11 game stint in the AHL where he scored twice and added three assists. His 21 games in Atlanta were uneventful, playing on the fourth line, and his only NHL goal came on the losing side of a blowout at home to Toronto.

Talent Analysis

Cormier has a very intriguing package of skills. At 6'2, 201 lbs, he is well built to play a power-forward type of game, and he's definitely not afraid to play that way. Cormier has good hockey sense and an above average shot. He forechecks aggressively, throwing his weight around and will power his way to the front of the net with the puck to create offense. He works hard at both ends of the rink and is a contributor on both the power play and penalty kill.

Future

Unable to make the Winnipeg Jets roster out of training camp, Cormier was assigned to the St. John’s IceCaps and will have to work his way back into the NHL lineup. Still the first choice as the checking line center of the future, Cormier needs a strong season in the AHL to secure that status.
