History
2006-07: A nephew of former NHL defenseman Trent Yawney, Melnychuk was Brandon’s third pick (50th overall) in the 2006 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He was a member of the Notre Dame AAA Midget Hounds, where he racked up five goals and 11 assists in 43 regular season games.
2007-08: This was the defenseman’s rookie season with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL). He tallied six assists in 58 games. He picked up his first ever WHL assist on Oct. 17 vs. Red Deer Melnychuk was also a member of Team Western at this year’s World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in London, Ontario.
2008-09: Melnychuk improved his game over the summer and it shows in his play this season. In 71 games with Brandon (WHL), the D-man has 16 points (3g+13a) and 39 PIM to boot. He’s a disciplined, stay-at-home defenseman. Registered two goals and an assists in 12 playoff appearances.
Talent Analysis
Primarily a stay-at-home rearguard, Melnychuk is focused more on keeping pucks out of the Brandon goal. He is a big player who will benefit from weight gain during the current off-season. He skates well enough at this juncture of his career to be considered a mobile defenseman, but he will have to be mindful that increasing his foot speed next season will be very important. Developing a mean streak will also help.
